Nepali Romanized keyboard or phonetic typing?

By NepType project ·

Choose an input method

If you want to type familiar Roman words and choose Nepali spellings, use a word-based transliteration pad such as NepType. If you need to learn the key positions of a particular Nepali Romanized keyboard, use that named layout's chart. Both may be described as phonetic. The word Romanized alone does not tell you which input method a tool uses.

A Romanized layout maps keys to Nepali characters

Language Technology Kendra describes its Romanized layout as semi-phonetic: the keys follow a sound-related mapping. You build the spelling with that layout's keys and combinations. The key chart, including its Shift layer and vowel signs, is your reference. The layout controls text entry; a font controls the appearance of the letters. Check the exact layout name before following a chart.

NepType converts the Roman words you write

In NepType, leave your usual English keyboard active and type into the Roman input box. The shared engine produces Nepali words and offers spelling choices. These examples use Nepali + EN mode. They are tested NepType inputs, not keystroke instructions for the LTK or Keyman layout.

mero ghar najik cha.मेरो घर नजिक छ।
aama gharma hunuhunchha.आमा घरमा हुनुहुन्छ।
bholi gau janchu.भोलि गाउँ जान्छु।

Choose the spelling the sentence needs

A Roman word can have several Nepali readings. For pani, NepType offers both पनि and पानी, as well as the original Roman spelling. Choose the word that fits your meaning. A layout chart will not choose that meaning for you. In NepType, edit the Roman source or select a spelling suggestion; the Nepali output box is read-only.

Match the tool to the task

For a message you plan to copy into another app, try a short sentence in the browser pad and check its spelling. For practice in a specifically named keyboard layout, learn that layout's key positions and test the selected input source in your destination app. If a course or task requires a particular layout, check its stated requirements first. NepType's browser pad does not install or switch a system keyboard.

  1. Check whether your task names a required keyboard layout.
  2. Use the matching key chart for layout practice, or use Roman-word input for a copyable message.
  3. Review the finished Nepali spelling before copying it into your document.

Use current setup instructions for your chosen layout

The LTK reference includes old Windows XP and Linux setup instructions. Do not treat those steps as a verified guide for a current computer. Its layout chart remains a reference for the layout it names. When choosing a keyboard package, check that package's current documentation for your operating system. In NepType, use Copy text to move the finished output into your own app.
